Forget going door to door or sending mailers to collect monitary donations. Try collecting emails and soliciting for donations via emails. For pennies or less per email, you can send thousands of emails.

Quick Tip - collect emails on your website as well as via any paperwork or forms that you may have your charity volunteers or participants fill out, so that you can build a larger email list. Also, the more frequent your emails are, the more people will remember you. Remind them of upcoming events, and other dates for their calendar.

Important Note - there are specific rules for sending out mass emails. They aren’t complicated, but you must follow them. CANN SPAM is the official nomenclature. Check it out.

Tired of getting the same donations, but not enough of what you really need? Looking for something that you can’t afford to buy? Many non-profit organizations suffer from a shortage of physical items, from enough children’s and baby clothes to office supplies, depending on the specific organization.

Try www.Freesale.com.  Basically, it’s a local exchange program based on the idea that if you need one, you ask for one, have one, give it away.  You never know what you might find, or who might have something that you can use.

If you have some spare cash and are looking to spend used, you can try craigslist.org.  Craigslist is an online classifieds section, where you might just find a bargain price or even free to a good home.

Looking for money? What non profit isn’t. But most small non-profits skip the big boys when looking for grant money.  However, what you may not know is that major corporations and chain stores allocate money for local donations.   Many small nonprofit organizations forget that corporations such as McDonalds, Target, and Walmart have regional funds available.

Check online or inquire at their store. Don’t hesitate to ask a store manager to participate in your fund-raising project.  You may be surprised at the outcome.

Next time when you shop look around the customer service area and you’ll see signs about how your favorite store pays back the community via fundraising, time donation, and other charitable measures.  Imagine your charity on that poster!

Need computer hardware or services? Try your local college. First of all, there will be a whole department full of computer savvy technicians willing to advice you on how to do things on a shoe string budget. Chances are, they’ve been stuck doing things like that for years. They can introduce you to free software, and more. And, chances are, if anyone is upgrading computers or monitors on a regular basis and scraping the old ones, you’ll find it to be colleges in the area.

If you don’t have success finding a college to provide donations, you may want to keep your eye on the business section of the local newspaper. Has a company recently purchased a new building? Downsized? You may find that they suddenly have a surplus of spare computer parts around ripe to be donated. However, many businesses lease computers. So, you may be just as smart to contact Dell directly and see if they have a program for donating refurbished back from lease computers to nonprofits.
