Selling Products Online
In one experience I had with non-profits, I found that they sold t-shirts to the volunteers for $10. The volunteers wore the t-shirts, and it served as marketing, but only a few hundred dollars were made in total profit all year on t-shirts, and for the rest of the year, someone had to take orders, collect money, order the t-shirts, send the artwork, pay for the t-shirts, pick up the t-shirts, and repeat the process for each event. A lot of headache for very little return.
I started talking to some high school marching band parents, and found a similar process. But, while that small profit was invaluable to the students in its contribution, the number of volunteers involved made the process laboring, and time consuming for everyone involved just for a couple of t-shirts. I mentioned to the parent a solution that I had tried with the non-profit company who was only making a small profit on their t-shirts. The name of the solution - a company called CafePress.com.
CafePress.comallows you to custom build products online, and create a store for your supporters to shop in, earning you a commission on all sales of that product. You set the price, and determine how much profit you make. No more collecting order forms and checks. You don’t even have to agree on the color of the T-shirt. You can allow your store to carry tote bags, teddy bears, magnets, buttons, sweatshirts, and more. The shirts are shipped right to the person ordering the product. Better yet, your store isn’t just limited to your volunteers. Print the address of your store in your newsletter or email list, and spread the word about your products. And don’t forget to add a link on your website!
Soon, I found out that the high school band parents had moved on to musical season and had such a success with their t-shirts, bags, and other gift sales from band season that they were now having a store for their high school musical! CafePress.comisn’t the only website that offers these services.Shirt Magic is another T-shirt and gift creator store.
